Indian Valley Tour of Ranches, Cemeteries &Towns:
Join tour guides from the Plumas County Museum as they take you on a bus tour of the picturesque and historic Indian and Genesee valleys. The Plumas Transit bus will leave the museum at 500 Jackson Street on Saturday, August 18th at 8:30 a.m. sharp. We will take Highway 70/89 northwest from Quincy past Keddie Resort, Spanish Creek Bridge and Camp Wallace – Alexander, Goat Hill and the historic Indian Valley wagon road to the junction of Highway 89. Today's highway, once the right of way for the Indian Valley Railroad, winds up Indian Creek past the Dawn Institute and Soda Rock, a site of great spiritual importance to the Maidu people, to the town of Indian Falls. Sections of the historic Indian Valley wagon road can be seen in the form of tall rock walls along and above the highway, and near the entrance to Indian Valley is Split Rock, an important piece in the Maidu Indians' history with Indian Valley. At Taylorsville a visit to the superb Indian Valley Museum presents a wonderful opportunity to see first hand the artifacts, photographs, and other belongings of the Native American and pioneer residents of the valley. Additionally, the mineral room at the museum houses one of the finest gem and mineral collections anywhere. Next door to the museum is the serene Taylorsville Cemetery, where many early settlers now repose. From Taylorsville the tour will continue up Indian Creek to the Heart K Ranch for a tour of the barns on the Feather River Land Trust property. A quick stop at the Genesee Store will be made to pick up our specially made lunches, with lunch being taken at the Taylorsville Rodeo Grounds picnic area. After this stop we will resume the trip, passing the site of Veramont on the now defunct Indian Valley Railroad, then making a loop through the North Arm of Indian Valley, viewing the historic Peter Ranch, the Ford Cemetery, Lights Creek and Engel's Mine road (historic Clark Trail to Honey Lake Valley) and the Van Fleet and Defanti Ranch. Back on the North Valley Road we will see the Chico Jim Indian Cemetery, the Peter Lassen monument commemorating the first building in Indian Valley, the site of the old Indian Mission, and the restored Schieser Ranch house. Upon reaching Greenville participants may want to take the historic walking tour or visit one of several gift shops. After a brief stop we will continue to Crescent Mills and its historic school, cemetery and downtown, then reconnect with our route at Arlington Road and head back to Quincy, arriving about 5 p.m.
